The Alter-Air Story

BACKGROUND

 

Alter-Air Corporation had its beginnings in 2001 when Shields T. Fair, noted engineer, inventor and innovator started the company Comfitrol to develop an efficient air conditioner.  In March 2004 Comfitrol became today’s Alter-Air Corporation 

 

Alter-Air’s early beginnings were focused on research and development of more efficient and less energy-consuming air conditioning.  Shields’ talented engineering team also looked at other challenges including producing water from air.   

 

Today, Alter-Air creates engineering driven solutions that address resource-wasting applications through energy efficient products.  The first two products are the ultra-high-efficiency air conditioner (ACE) and the Water-from-Air Generator (WAG).

 

 

NEW PRODUCTS

 

Air Cooled by the Environment – ACE

 

Already in production, the ACE is the first ultra-high-efficiency air conditioning product, which does not contribute to global warming.  Its 3 major benefits:

 

  1. Significantly lowers energy consumption by eliminating the initial starting power surges of the compressor in the traditional air conditioning unit.  ACE’s 3-1/2 ton system operates off 110VAC, single phase at less than 1200 watts -- less than a blow dryer. Ultra-High-Efficiency – EER of 30
     

  2. Freon free – ACE does not use chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) and hydrochlorofluorocarbons (HCFCs) like old technology air conditioners.  CFCs and HCFCs are ozone-depleting substances commonly referred to as greenhouses gases and are a major contributor to global warming.
     

  3. ACE’s exhaust air is 80°F, whereas a typical air conditioner exhausts air that is 120°F.  This feature makes the ACE ideally suited for an office / workshop where the shop is utilizes precision metal tooling and / or the manufacture of precision metal parts, where rust is a concern. Such shops typically require cooling with an air conditioner. With ACE, the supply will cool the office and the exhaust will cool the shop at no additional cost.

Water-from-Air Generator – WAG

The WAG is in the final stages of performance testing. Stories about the problems of providing clean drinking water to people in need are frequently in the news, including recently in the State of Georgia.  Three major benefits of a Wag are:

 

  1. Potable water where you need it.  Designed for outdoor use, and durability, the WAG can bring water to remote locations and disaster relief sites.
     

  2. Certified pure.  Meets or exceeds the National Sanitation Foundation specifications NSF 42 and NSF 53.

  3. Saves money – reduces transportation costs associated with trucking bottled water into areas of need.

 

THE FUTURE

 

As an engineering-driven company, Alter-Air is constantly looking for new applications of technology. This will be the major focus of the company’s new, wholly owned subsidiary, Alter-Air Research LLC.  Under the direction of Shields Fair, Alter-Air Research can provide people who have ideas and working models with the opportunity to take potentially energy-saving products through the prototype phase and, if appropriate, to have Alter-Air produce, market and sell the products.
